It is used for biodiversity research, the study of habitats and it protects threatened plants. All of this is supported by education and visitor programs.

The visitor centre is located at the observatory precinct on Birdwood Avenue. During weekdays it is open from 9 am – 5 pm and in the weekend and during public holidays from 9.30 am – 5 pm.

The park organizes different tours such as the Aboriginal Heritage Walk, Garden Discovery Tour, Garden Explorer and the Aboriginal Melbourne Tour.
